On the basketball court playing for Virginia Wesleyan University, Nicole M. Thurston learned the importance of concentration, hard work, and patience. She brings those same skills and more to her work as a family law attorney with Mahoney & Richmond, PLLC.

Nicole’s areas of expertise include cases of divorce, support, custody and equitable distribution, same-sex adoption and agency and parent-placement adoption in general, plus pre- and post-marital contracts.

From a young age, Nicole learned to be versatile, having lived abroad in Spain and Germany with her family while her father served as a U.S. Army Officer. Her mother, a native of Spain, passed on the ability to fluently speak Spanish to her daughter. That bilingual ability landed Nicole a job after law school representing a Spanish-speaking client in a divorce proceeding. She served as co-chair to opposing counsel, M&R Law’s Reeves W. Mahoney and Andrew T. Richmond. Less than a year later, the three attorneys were working on the same team.

Nicole served on the board of Hampton Roads Pride, where she handled fundraising for the organization’s annual PrideFest. She also is a 2018 inductee of CoVa Biz magazine’s Millennials on the Move, and a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Hampton Roads Finest Honoree in 2017. She is a member of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, I’Anson Hoffman American Inn of Court, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Professional Leadership Council.

She also has been named to the 2019 Virginia Super Lawyers: Rising Star list, a 2018 Coastal Virginia Magazine Top Lawyer and a part of Virginia Business Magazine’s Legal Elite.

After graduating from VWU with Outstanding Senior Awards in both of her majors, Political Science and Spanish (she also recently finished her term on the VWU Alumni Council), Nicole took a year off before entering law school to teach high school Spanish. After, she earned her law degree from Regent University School of Law, where she co-founded Regent’s Hispanic Law Student Association.

She and her wife, Andrea Thurston, live in Virginia Beach with their Virginia Beach SPCA-adopted pup, Lewy, a Weimaraner. The couple also enjoys playing bocce.
